InGAME is supporting V&A Dundee’s first video game commission, Plaything. Find out how Abertay students got on with the first open playtest.
Plaything is a colourful web game, featuring a blend of hand-crafted animation and interactive generative art. The game starts with you to creating a small character from a series of geo-metric shapes. Plaything will be launched alongside V&A Dundee’s Videogames:Design/Play/Disrupt exhibit which runs until 8th September 2019. The game has been created by two first time collaborators, filmmaker Will Anderson and gamemaker Niall Tessier-Lavigne, who we interviewed below.V&A Dundee asked InGAME to support the Plaything from the commissioning stage. As launch date approached, the developers were keen to guage the player’s emotional response to the character they create. Therefore, we arranged for a group of first and fourth year students from Abertay University to playtest an early build of the game. Opportunities like this help develop the yound Dundee talent as students learn how to work to a set brief. The testing also helps to de-risk the production process for two local creators, giving them the confidence to launch their first endeavour at an international exhibition. The work strengthens our partnership with V&A Dundee, who will provide their Design for Business services as part of the full suite of R&D solutions available from InGAME. Access to Design for Business scheme will be allocated as part of our R&D voucher application scheme which you can apply for via our expression of interest form.Russell Dornan, Digital Producer at V&A Dundee, has produced a series of lovely articles tracking the development of Plaything which is well worth a look.
